The Earthquakes have been unsettling but the city is now a lot safer with most dangerous buildings demolished or sealed off. In winter the opportunity to go skiing is relatively easy and inexpensive compared to a trip to Europe, with a variety of ski fields within an easy day's drive of Christchurch. You will find winters are similar in temperature to Ireland but a lot drier! In summer the weather is generally very settled with temperatures ranging from 20 degrees up to around 28 degrees.
